You are teaching your child to read at home
Your child is struggling to learn to read
You are overwhelmed by all the reading programs
You want clear, research-backed strategies
You want your child to LOVE reading
Hi, I’m Vaunda Jo Montoya — literacy coach, mom, and a lifelong lover of children's books. For over 20 years, I’ve worked in ESL classrooms, early childhood programs, and literacy intervention — helping children (and their parents) unlock the joy and confidence that comes from knowing how to read.
But my journey didn’t start with fancy teaching degrees or big curriculums… It started with my own children. When I first decided to teach my kids to read at home, I was overwhelmed, confused, and frustrated.
I quickly learned that many reading programs skip over the most important step: Phonological and phonemic awareness. Once I understood how essential these skills were, I became determined to make it simple and doable for parents everywhere.
Most people think struggling readers need more phonics worksheets, but the research is
clear.
The biggest predictor of reading struggles is actually poor phonemic awareness.
If your child cannot hear and play with sounds in words, phonics will not work.
That is why I created this free phonemic awareness guide to show you how to fix this before you
even touch phonics.

"I was completely overwhelmed."
I wanted to help my son learn to read, but I didn’t even know where to start. Every time I searched online, I got even more confused—so many programs, so much jargon, and honestly, I’m
not
a teacher.
Then I found Vaunda Jo's guide.
The way she breaks things down—especially phonological and phonemic awareness—just made everything
click
. The step-by-step lessons and word lists gave me the confidence to teach him without second-guessing myself.
And the best part? I’ve watched my son go from frustrated to
excited
about reading.
I finally feel like I’m doing something that actually works.

"I wish I had this years ago."
I’ve tried it all—flashcards, expensive apps, and even a tutor. But no one ever told me how important phonemic awareness was. I was focusing on phonics and skipping a step my daughter
desperately
needed.
This resource explained everything in plain language, and the scripted lessons? A total game changer.
We now spend 5–10 minutes a day doing the activities, and I’ve already seen a huge improvement in how she hears and plays with sounds.
She’s gaining skills I know will help her for life.
"It’s like having a reading coach in my pocket."
I don’t have a teaching background, but I care deeply about my child’s education.
Vaunda Jo’s resources made me feel empowered. I didn’t need hours of research or expensive materials—the activities are quick, fun, and backed by research. And they WORK.
When I used the assessments she included, I was able to pinpoint exactly where my son needed help.
No more guessing. Just real progress.
